In Syndicate, we keep jumping back to modern-day scenes featuring two bit players from the previous games, as they-actually, I have no idea what they're even doing anymore, besides engaging in the umpteenth breathless, time-is-of-the-essence heist in which they attempt to snatch another crucial McGuffin away from the Knights Templar.
Assassin creed syndicate series#
Every historical adventure has been linked together into one massive meta-narrative that involves modern-day Assassins plumbing the past for information that will help them in their contemporary fight against the Templars, but each successive game in the series seems to be taking a thinner and thinner slice out of what's left of that pie. The biggest drag on Assassin's Creed isn't the creaky engine but the years-old, voluminous storyline. Assassin's Creed could use a reboot, a chance to start fresh.īut there's only so much you can graft on to an aging skeleton before it starts to go all out of joint. Not purely in its engine, which has the exact same bugs as games from half a decade ago, but the dozen games' worth of lore that seems to be making it impossible to do something truly surprising again. But it's impossible to not notice, even when having fun, that Assassin's Creed is a very old game. Syndicate's choice of era (Victorian London) and emphasis on infiltration-assassination missions (no time-sucking filler) certainly had me hooked. The concept-play as a blade-wielding, rooftop-clambering silent assassin through various time periods-was always strong, if severely diluted by Ubisoft's parade of annual revisions. I've certainly spent much more time with it, and had much more fun with it, than I have with any of the games in recent years.

Next year, meanwhile, will also see the premiere of a live-action Assassin's Creed movie starring Michael Fassbender. In fact, there's already been an Assassin's Creed game this year, with the launch of the 2D Chronicles spin-off. Much like other blockbuster series, including Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed has become an annualized franchise, with at least one new release coming out each year since its debut in 2007. The new game's announcement shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

Unfortunately, it was also marred by a seemingly never-ending string of technical issues. Unity, the previous main entry in the series, was the first built exclusively for the new generation of consoles ( ACIV launched on both generations), and featured a stunningly realized virtual version of Paris during the French Revolution. Amidst blossoming conflicts between newly crowned kings of industry and the working class they exploit for all they're worth, Jacob will work in the shadows as he climbs to the top of the criminal underground as the head of one of the city's most notorious street gangs. In Assassin's Creed Syndicate you'll play as Jacob Frye, an assassin born and bred poised to take over the criminal underworld of London during the Industrial Revolution. Syndicate will let you enlist the help of street gangs during your quest, and the studio claims it will be the fastest game in the series, with a new emphasis on weapons like hidden blades and brass knuckles. It's being developed at Ubisoft's Quebec City studio, instead of Montreal where the series is normally developed. It will feature both male and female protagonists, siblings Jacob and Evie Frye - the developer came under fire for its comments on female characters at last year's E3 - although Jacob appears to be the game's lead. Following a series of rumors, today Ubisoft officially unveiled the latest game in the series, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, which will shift the setting to Industrial Revolution-era London in 1868. After last year's foray into Paris, Assassin's Creed is returning to another European capital: London.
